First workhubs conference in June

The first national workhubs conference will see the launch of our national report for government on workhubs and their role in supporting home-based businesses in a low carbon economy.

The report is supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Homes and Communities Agency, the Commission for Rural Communities and two regional development agencies: Advantage West Midlands and SEEDA.

The conference, to be held in BT's superb conference facilities, close to St Paul's Cathedral, will give a platform to leading policy makers, the UK's top workhub managers and hub users themselves.

Who should attend?

This conference will be important for anyone with a role in economic development or business support and those concerned with spatial planning for a low carbon built environment. It will be ideal for:

  • Business Link managers
  • local authority economic development managers
  • regeneration agency managers
  • local authority planners leading on low carbon communities, ecotowns and similar initiatives
  • creative cluster specialists
  • enterprise agencies
  • housing associations looking to encourage home-based business and entrepreneurial talent
  • trade bodies representing self-employed people and freelance professionals
  • academics

Over the past six months, Live Work Network has visited over 20 workhubs across the UK to get a feel for on-the-ground challenges for those providing this essential facility and the views of the diverse people using them.

The conference will be a chance to discuss issues highlighted by our research and documented in our report.

We hope too it will set in place a structure for the first ever national network of workhubs:

  • promoting the unique role of workhubs
  • helping home-based businesses find their nearest workhub
  • promoting good practice between workhubs
  • helping local authorities, housing associations and developers to create vibrant workhubs
  • representing workhubs as a single sector, advising government and national/regional agencies.
